Out of the problems caused by too many water hyacinth pestering crop production, farmers and housewives and the barangay council of barangay San Miguel have thought of eradicating this volume of waterlily. With the help of Congresswoman Alvarado, she sought the assistance of the technical personnel from Las Pinas City through the courtesy of Congresswoman Cynthia Villar that these group of housewives shall be taught to earn a livelihood out of the by products of waterlily stalks. That started it, followed by the assistance of the Local Government of Calumpit for them to fully organized and register as an association. From then on, technical assistance from different government agencies were sourced out to assist the development of waterlily based production. Financial assistance was initially granted to the group by the Municipal Government through the Self Employment Assistance Program (SEA). Their tie ups and linkages to various government agencies was facilitated by the Municipal Government. Technical Assistance as well as financial assistance is being provided by the Department of Trade and Industry, Department of Science and Technology, TESDA, Provincial Government of Bulacan and the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) which provided financial assistance through their WORKSTREP Program.

Nowadays , this water hyacinth which was treated as “nothing” have turned into “something” and is now source of Livelihood for this group. With this industry, the Municipality of Calumpit has been adjudge as the best OTOP implementer in the Province of Bulacan in the year 2009, by the Department of Trade and Industry , and an automatic nomination to the 2009 National Search for OTOP.
